The History of Casto

Our strong foundation is built upon the beliefs and values of its visionary founder Don Monroe Casto Sr., a self-reliant, innovative businessman who began as a builderof single-family homes in Upper Arlington, Ohio in the mid 1920’s.

When he met sales resistance from prospective new homeowners because there was nowhere nearby to shop (and they were not willing to travel downtown), Casto was determined to provide them with the types of stores they frequented. In 1928 he grouped three national grocery chains together as one suburban location and introduced the concept of collective merchandising, the shift was made from residential to retail development. Casto’s portfolio now includes more that 20 million square feet of retail space along with nearly 5,000 multi-family housing units in 23 luxury communities throughout the Midwest and southeastern United States.
